How I Got to Making Sports Team Light Sculptures Using Plexiglass

I get different requests for commissions all the time. Usually they center around the clients favorite pastime, or interest. I once worked with someone who was obsessed with the Buffalo Bills football team. He had Buffalo bills hats, coffee cups, blankets – you name it; he had it with the logo.

One day he came to me to ask me to make him something with the Buffalo Bills. I asked him what he wanted. Did he want a painting? A sculpture? He said do whatever you want. After some consideration I decided to work with plexiglass, a relative new material for me at the time. I had used it once before on a completely different type of projectJohn in Space. Plexiglass, also referred to as acrylic, is essentially a sheet of plastic, available in pretty much any color you can think of as well as transparencies and even as colored mirrors.

So with the material in mind, I set out and started designing the piece. I designed a sculpture that could be hung on a wall and was strictly the outline of the Buffalo Bills logo where  each layer of the symbol would be a 3 dimensional tier of the piece. I also wanted to add another element to it to really stand out. So I decided on illuminating it from within. I used transparent plexiglass so the lights I installed inside could shine through quite nicely, making it an excellent accent piece to have on while settling in to watch the game.

After I made this piece for my coworker, it started a chain reaction. People who saw it also felt inspired to represent their team in this way. That’s how I started making these sport team “light boxes”; as my husband calls them. I found the more I made them the more refined I got in the craft. I discovered there were certain blades designed for plexiglass and I learned how to cut the plexiglass better. I invested in a belt sander to smooth the edges out just right. I’ll link a list below the tools I've used to enhance my craft. I even learned through mistakes not to try to take apart what I already glued together because it is near impossible the acrylic glue I use chemically burns and fuses the two pieces of plastic together! Making it impossible to pry apart. Another improvement I made to these pieces from the first one; was I switched to battery powered led light strips instead of the plug-in lights.

So far I’ve been asked to make these sport lights for a few different teams. I’ve done about 4 New York Giants ones, (the old and the new logo). I’ve done a Los Angeles Lakers one, that one was challenging because of the details but still came out great. I’ve done Green Bay Packers, New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Steelers, and a couple of New England Patriots.

While designing art inspired by sports teams is far from my original art. It’s fun and interesting to see what inspires and gets my clients excited about art. Not everyone wants, pop or abstract art; but everyone has walls they want to decorate. Why not hang pieces inspired by what you hold dear. These Sport signs opened me up to a completely different market then I originally had, and allowed me to strengthen a new skill in the meantime. Now that I have the expertise in this medium, I’ve had people come to me with other ideas for it. Someone asked me about a Red Hot Chili Peppers Logo, and I’m currently making a Pan Am logo in this fashion for a client. I can’t wait to show you guys how it comes out!
